Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board tests or simply PLAB tests are conducted for medical school graduates who graduated outside the UK, European Economic Area, and Switzerland. These tests are taken to assess the skills and knowledge of graduates who wish to practice medicine in the UK. Study Medic has created an integrated PLAB course, including mentoring plans, online teaching methods, and study resources.
2023 Part 1 Exam Fees
The PLAB tests are taken into two parts.
Part 1 is a written exam that consists of 180 multiple-choice questions. Each question is made of two parts: a short scenario and the question itself. The students have to read the scenario and select the appropriate answer for the given question from the five options. A time period of three hours is allowed for the test.
The scenarios and questions are based on the practices followed and medical equipment used in the UK, and they aim to test how well a person can take care of patients.
The PLAB part 1 test can be taken in the following countries:
PLAB Part 2 is an objective structured clinical exam consisting of 18 questions, and each question lasts eight minutes. These questions represent real-life situations like mock consultations and acute wards.
The test includes all the topics and conditions that a UK-trained doctor in Foundation Year 2 might face. A student should keep the published evidence which is based on practices followed in the UK, in mind while attempting the test.
The PLAB part 2 test can be taken in the UK only.
To prepare for the tests, GMC provides the following resources:
The blueprint for PLAB acts as a guide for the candidates, telling them what things are covered in the tests. It describes the knowledge, skills and behaviour that are expected by the authorities at the time of the test and after that.
The blueprint has two sections. First is knowledge which includes the conditions and presentations to be tested. These conditions and presentations match the real world scenarios faced by doctors in their second year of the Foundation Programme. The second section is the domain section that includes the guidance for the skills, behaviour and professional value that are expected from doctors practising in the UK.
With the help of the blueprint, the candidates can learn about the tests’ core guidance, Good medical practices. The blueprint covers all the four domains that lay out Good medical practices’ principles to be followed by the candidates. It also covers the questions and scenarios that a candidate might expect in part 1 and part 2 of the tests.
A candidate can apply for both PLAB part 1 and PLAB part 2 four times. The students can apply for part 2 of PLAB only when their pass for part 1 is within the permitted time period.
The fees for PLAB tests are as follows: In the UK: 239 GBP for part 1 and 875 GBP for part 2. In India: 24,416 ₹ for part 1 and 89,425 ₹ for part 2.

After completing the registration, the candidate will receive an email containing the following information: -Registration details -Date of examination -Venue and time of examination The deadline for registration is usually eight weeks before the date of the examination.
