Being a doctor, there are high chances that you may face unprecedented challenges, not just clinically, but also while handling patients. To be an exceptional clinician, your patient-handling skills must be spot on. Undoubtedly, this is why Ethics/Safeguarding is such an important topic in PLAB 2.

Why Does the Topic Matter?

Handling vulnerable patients, managing difficult scenarios under pressure and responding sensitively to disclosures, all while upholding the GMC principles, is a test of your expertise and empathy, and that is exactly why it is tested in the PLAB 2 exam.  Ethics/Safeguarding is an area that demands good levels of communication and professionalism, because your patients may come from diverse backgrounds with concerns that are far beyond expectations, in certain cases. Let it be a woman coming to consult you with bruises resulting from domestic violence, an elderly man meeting you with severe pain that he claims occurred due to a fall but is hinting at abuse, or a confused young girl seeking advice on contraception. Imagine yourself addressing such scenarios in the real world. As a doctor, you must be ready for it when the moment calls, and by including the subject in the OSCE examination, PLAB 2 prepares you for it. Being able to efficiently handle such scenarios in the exam portrays your abilities in this regard without question.

How Difficult Is the Station in PLAB 2 Exam

The Ethics/Safeguarding station in the PLAB 2 Exam is challenging because of the uncertainty it possesses, unlike the clinical stations that are structured better. Here, you are required to think and act, upholding the ethical and emotional considerations within a clinical setting. Not every cue given by the patient may be evident, making it difficult to interpret their concerns. You need to understand them, think empathetically and act as per the GMC guidelines and protocols. And the toughest part is that you are required to do all these in just a few minutes. Demanding your critical thinking abilities, clinical reasoning skills and sensitivity towards human behaviours, the station is relatively tougher.

How to Prepare?

The only effective way to score high in the Ethics/ Safeguarding station is through continuous practice. Do as many timed mock tests with as many scenarios as possible. Familiarising yourself with different situations will make you confident in communicating quickly and efficaciously.
