The Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board (PLAB) test is a gateway for medical graduates to practice in the UK. Divided into two parts, PLAB 1 and PLAB 2, this exam assesses whether a doctor has the knowledge and skills to work safely in a UK hospital. PLAB 1, the first step is a written exam, and understanding its syllabus is crucial for success.

What is PLAB 1 Exam?

PLAB 1 is an applied knowledge test that tests your ability to apply your knowledge to patient-care scenarios and it’s not about how well you recite facts. Questions are related to the current best medical practices in the UK, and equipment and technologies commonly used in the UK hospitals.

The PLAB 1 examination consists of 180 multiple-choice questions (MCQ), five options with single best answer (SBA). Candidates will get three hours to complete the exam and answers are to be selected based on published evidence and not according to local medical experiences.

The PLAB 1 exam tests your skills in four groups

  • Diagnosis- Select the best one from the range of possibilities.
  • Investigation- Interpret diagnostic tests
  • Management- Select the most suitable course of treatment
  • The context of clinical practice
