For a clinician, a primary medical qualification like an MBBS degree is not the end but rather the starting point of a vast career in the medical field. Doctors in India can pursue a higher degree, such as an MD or MS, by clearing the NEET PG exam or appear for international qualification examinations like the PLAB to advance their careers abroad. The question now is whether NEET PG or PLAB is the most desirable option to pursue for medicos India.

Understanding NEET-PG

NEET-PG, or the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test for Postgraduates, is an entrance examination conducted by the National Board of Examinations in Medical Sciences that grants students admission to various higher medical degrees, such as Doctor of Medicine (MD), Master of Surgery (MS), PG Diploma, Diplomate of National Board (DNB), Doctorate of National Board (DrNB), and NBEMS Diploma. An Overview o PLAB Test

PLAB, or the Professional and Linguistic Assessment Board test is an evaluation examination that qualifies medical graduates from other countries to practice in the United Kingdom with specializations. It is conducted by the General Medical Council of the United Kingdom and tests the basic knowledge and medical communication skills of the medical practitioners. This examination is preferred by those who wish to take up medical practice in the UK or countries outside India that recognizes PLAB.

Examination Pattern

Both NEET-PG and PLAB evaluates the candidates’ subject knowledge and medical expertise in different levels. However there are differences in the pattern in which both theses exams are conducted.

NEET-PG: NEET PG exam is conducted in five sections with a total of 200 questions. It is a computer based examination conducted in English and includes 19 subjects from the MBBS curriculum.

However, if you are looking forward to a medical career abroad, particularly in the United Kingdom, taking the PLAB test is desirable. Passing the PLAB test is a mandatory criterion for doctors from other countries to practice as specialists within the UK. Doctors who have successfully completed the PLAB test and subsequent specialist training in the UK have higher chances of getting well-paid jobs in other PLAB-recognized countries as well.

Difficulty Level and Competition: The examination pattern and evaluation of both the NEET PG exam and the PLAB test are different. It is noted that, although PLAB consists of two parts, it is easier to crack, considering the difficulty level of the questions and the competition involved. NEET PG is attempted by most Indian medical graduates to pursue a higher degree, while PLAB is relatively less chosen.

Examination Expenses: Appearing for NEET-PG does not cost much for a candidate, as the examination fee is relatively low, and these exams are conducted in most cities across India. Additionally, the cost of post graduation courses is relatively affordable. On the other hand, PLAB is comparatively expensive, and completing the two-year specialization training following the PLAB test also requires a significant financial investment.

Job Role and Remuneration: Although doctors who pursue postgraduation after the NEET PG exam and specialization after the PLAB test are eligible for better job roles, there is a significant difference in the pay they receive. A PLAB-certified specialist working abroad, especially in the UK, receives a considerable amount of remuneration compared to a postgraduate specialist working in India.
