The PLAB exam is a gateway exam to practice medicine in the UK. It is conducted by the General Medical Council (GMC) to evaluate the capability of international medical graduates to undertake medical practice in the UK.

PLAB Exam Structure and Format

The PLAB exam consists of two parts, namely PLAB 1 and PLAB 2, which comprehensively cover the theoretical and clinical aspects. The PLAB exam is a computer-based written exam designed to test your medical knowledge through multiple-choice questions intended to test your ability to apply that knowledge in a UK healthcare setting.

The PLAB 2 exam is conducted in an OSCE format, short for Objective Structured Clinical Examination. Which consists of 16 scenarios, each lasting 8 minutes, and aims to analyse the competency of the medical graduate in a clinical setting.

PLAB Exam Eligibility Criteria

A candidate needs to meet the following eligibility criteria to take part in the PLAB examination.

  • Must be a recipient of a primary medical qualification from an institute listed in the World Directory of Medical Schools. Make sure to crosscheck on the GMC site whether your qualification is accepted or not.
  • Needs to have passed an English language proficiency test like the IELTS or OET
  • Possess at least 12 months of postgraduate clinical experience.
