Practising as a physician in the United Kingdom is a dream for many medical graduates across the globe. Working in the NHS, UK, one of the world’s most prestigious healthcare systems, offers a lot of personal and professional rewards to them. The opportunity to adapt to a new culture and lifestyle, better quality of life and higher remuneration – all these make the UK an attractive destination for medical professionals.
However, to achieve this dream, you must apply for GMC registration. It is a must to practice medicine legally in the UK. There are several routes to complete your GMC registration and one of the most common pathways is passing the PLAB exam.
Understanding the PLAB exam
PLAB is the acronym of the Professional and Linguistics Assessments Board test. The exam evaluates whether international medical graduates have the right knowledge and skills to practice medicine safely in the UK. The exam is divided into two parts, namely PLAB 1 and PLAB 2.
PLAB 1 is a written multiple choice exam made up of 180 single best answer questions and the duration of the exam is three hours. The next step is PLAB 2. It is a practical Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE) that tests your clinical skills, communication and professionalism through a series of simulated patient stations.
What happens after PLAB 2?
Passing the PLAB 2 means that you are eligible to apply for GMC registration with a licence to practise. Remember that you must apply within two years from the date you took the PLAB 2 exam (not the result published date). If you delay your application and go beyond two years, then you will need to provide additional proof of your knowledge and skills.
Once the application is submitted, the GMC will review your documents and let you know if anything more is needed. Once they approve and grant you registration, you are officially allowed to work as a doctor in the UK.
Clearing the PLAB test is a huge achievement for international medical graduates, which can act as a gateway to join the esteemed ranks of the UK’s medical professionals and to contribute to one of the world’s most advanced healthcare systems.
